Well-rounded, believable characters are essential to developing an engaging story, but inexperienced writers will often try to let the characters grow organically rather than actively thinking about why they do what they do. This can lead to thinly-drawn characters that lack substance.
This template encourages students to develop strong, well-rounded characters by considering their traits (physical and personality), motivation, personal and plot problems, risk, and morality. This template focuses on major characters – the protagonist and antagonist – and includes detailed instructional text, which may be removed or left in at the teacher’s discretion.
An example template detailing this technique’s use in the development of Greythorne is also included.
